Burj Khalifa Information

Construction

Beginning from excavating the foundation in 2004, Sheikh Mohammed’s vision took 6 years to come to life.  The foundation was dug deep with around 45,000 cubic meters of reinforced concrete poured to support the structure.

At the peak of construction, the site had over 12,000 workers and contractors every day. The entire construction took 22 million working hours according to developers, Emaar.

At 828 meters, the building was open to the public in January 2010. It then became the tallest building in the world, surpassing Taipei 101.

Design

Adrian Smith from American firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed the Burj Khalifa. The overall design is inspired from a desert flower.

The team also developed a “Y” shaped plan for the structural support of the building. The key considerations included wind forces and practicality during construction.
